Investigate a liar using facts, tools and techniques for lie detection

People normally believe of detecting deception easily. This is based on nonverbal indications or actions such as speaking louder unnecessarily. In fact, body language also indicates in some people to identify if they are coming out with truth or not.
Another fact believed is that dishonest people do not look into eyes straightly as an honest person. However, now there have been several instances that has failed the looking into eyes directly concept.
Recent researches believe that lying is a skill.  This art can also be learnt like other activities such as swimming, biking and driving. There are professional liars who keep a straight face and tell lies. They have acquired self training and so can do it perfectly. Of course, it needs many hours of practice and patience to acquire this skill. Thus, to detect deception, use tools such as reading the body language, it surely helps.
Depending on nonverbal indications may result in misinterpretation. Conversely, speaking the truth for some people is really stressful.  This is true when painful and sensitive matters are taken into concern. There is no doubt that the lie detection process is tricky and people rely completely on technological tools to expose the truth than depending on nonverbal signs.
The tools to detect lie are used by the law in crime suspects or while interrogating witnesses. Some of the tools used in common to reveal deception include the FMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) and Polygraph.
Working system
  • The FMRI is a technological tool also used for lie detection. Here the brain is scanned to know the mind working of the person to determine if a person is telling the truth.
  • The polygraph monitors and measures the heart rate of a person, blood pressure and skin conductance. If the monitored data show changes, it is associated with the anxiety level of a person. Thus when a person shows anxiety while interrogation, it is accepted he is lying.
  • Police investigators are experts in detecting lies. They initiate with non-threatening queries that people do not lie. Then police investigators take a step ahead and proceed with the process of formal interrogation. They observe and compare the activity in the brain to note if there are changes.
The truth is that even these tools cannot be considered to be accurate by 100%. A lie detector may give correct result in normal person as there will be increase in the levels of anxiety and brain activity. But, this can also be a misinterpretation as even normal people may be apprehensive about machines.
Another very important point is that professional liars easily conceal their anxiety feelings. In such cases, the machine cannot help as there will be no increase in anxiety levels and that does not make him an honest person, either.
